Anything Goes : Fifty Shades "Spin-off"? Seriously? by Sharon Yusop

Fifty Shades "Spin-off"? Seriously?

So, I just stumbled upon this article on bbc. The first book was really bad. I mean, really bad. Then they go on to make a movie on it which I pretty much anticipated would make over 200% ROI. Just when I thought it'll be over after 2 more movies, out comes a "spin-off". Check out the article on this link. What are the chances of this turning into another movie adaptation? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-33246805

This is atrocious! Morbid curiosity made me read it. We all know this will be a spin off, no denying. If the Box Office keeps banking on this franchise they'll milk it for all it's worth. Thank you sharing. BTW- read any good books lately?

Sharon Yusop

I read it out of curiosity too! I really hope this franchise would not be a prelude of things to come in the movie industry. Good books? I'm currently in the middle of a book series called The Wars of Light and Shadow by Janny Wurts. So far it's good; kinda like Lord of the Rings but its between two half brothers at each other's throats.

Stage 32 Staff - Julie

That sounds like an interesting book/series. I am finally reading The Davinci Code (about 15 years late!)

Sharon Yusop

Better late than never. That's a very good read. Absolute page turner. I had trouble putting that book down from page one. Way better than the movie. But then again, I read the book before the movie came out so I might not be too objective. Hehe.

Mallory Johnston

Never.

Sharon Yusop

To Mallory: Never? What do you mean?

Mallory Johnston

I read excerpts of Grey (the new one). I just wonder how it got past the editor. It's horrible. I don't like the franchise, simply because the book itself lacks sustenance for me. It may work for other people, but not me. Not to mention, the movies are full of holes. Had I not read the first book (gruelingly) I would have walked out of the theater before it even got going good.

Sharon Yusop

Hi Mallory I think you may have misread my comment. :-) My "better late than never" comment was in response to Julie's comment regarding reading Dan Brown's DaVinci Code. That said, I do agree with you. 50 shades was a total waste of tax payers money. I read it grudgingly too and my god, was it painful. BDSM topic aside, the writing itself was atrocious. I find it hard to believe that she used to be a TV exec.

Sharon Yusop

And they're doing a "spin-off"! I'm starting to wonder if people these days are no longer interested in good stories. That all they want these days is just quick thrilled and mindless entertainment.

Allison Chaney

I want to leave a comment, but I just can't. There are no words.

Stage 32 Staff - Julie

@Allison - haha!

Leona McDermott

Couldn't even finish the first page of the book. Just goes to show anyone can get published these days. Had no idea the film was a comedy so it was nice to be able to laugh all the way through it. More like 50 Shades of WTF did I just watch?

Sharon Yusop

Haha.. Good one Allison. Leona- Totally agree. That's what I thought when I watched the movie.

Sharon Yusop

Owen: Haha. Nah. No one pressured me to read the book. Like Twilight, I got sucked into the hype. Kept hearing about it and, just like Twilight, I got curious. And, i didn't buy the book. Someone passed a link to me where I could read it online, for free. ;-) The reason why I wondered why it got so popular was the fact that it got published in the first place, coz the writing was atrocious. I'm surprised that a literary editor would allow any badly written manuscripts to be published. Which brought me to think that these days, people would just buy into anything. Nothing wrong with that. Except it can get quite frustrating for people like myself who's trying to create something that has good story and good content, only to realise that people may not even care about that anymore. And I don't see why it's a problem/disease to share your opinions on anything online. I thought this was a place where creatives can share thoughts, ideas, opinions and information. If my post had somehow have offended/frustrated you, that wasn't my intention. Then again, you could've just ignored this entire post altogether :-)
