I am IJ St. John. I am an actress. I have experience in the theater, however, I would really like to gain experience in film, but really don't know how and where to begin. Would love to communicate with and learn from others. Really happy I was guided to Stage 32.

Hi IJ. I'm a working actor here in LA. Also have a course for newbies at actorbasics.com. But if you go there and sign up for the mailing list you'll get some freebies that will teach you the basics for casting sites, etc. After looking at that, maybe put some more specific questions here and we can go from there. Thanks IJ!

Hi IJ, you've definitely taken the right step by utilizing the acting lounge - lots of great people in here to give you advice. If you're interested, we had a fantastic webinar on the business of acting and how to get started - might be exactly what you need. You can read more about it here: https://www.stage32.com/webinars/The-Business-of-Acting Also, Chris and Randy above both have their own courses that are fantastic and I recommend networking with them!
Hi IJ :) Find film schools near you and audition for their projects. It's a great way to get experience in a "no/low pressure" situation! :) And, it will help you to gain confidence, build up your reel and get clear about the types of roles people see you as. With that being said: Don't let the types of roles you get cast for limit you!! Write and shoot the types of roles and projects YOU feel aligned with!! :D You can always find people to shoot with you, so get YOUR voice and heart out there!! Hope that helps!! Wishing you the best!! Gina
Gina, thank you for responding to my post. My thought was to begin just as your suggested. I am sure that students from the various films schools in my area need actors for their various film projects, but I have seen very few auditions online. Thank you so much for your advice and encouraging words. Best wishes to you...
Don't wait for auditions online... contact the schools directly! Maybe even go to the school with your contact info and give it to the Film Department directly and let them know you are an actress willing to give her time to be a part of the student films. In this digital age, I think we forget that actually going somewhere IN PERSON is an option! hahaha Go for it!!! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!! :D Wishing you an awesome day!!!
That such a lovely suggest Gina give you you can also do your own films start small and use crowdfundinng take a story that your passion about go to these schools and see if they will allow you to hire out the equipment create the parts that you want to play good luck you can anything you want say true to you best wishes Maria
Maria, thank you so much for your post. Though, I have been involved with Stage 32 for such a short time, through comments like yours, my understanding of what is possible keeps expanding. Your encouragement is greatly appreciated...IJ
Yes to all these great comments, AND you can even do stuff yourself! If you are like me, I don't like to wait around for others to make things happen for me.. I did it for too many years and now, I just create as much as I can :) You can even use your phone for now, and whatever basic editing program you have. Imagine, write, shoot, edit, share, repeat ;) "Do what you can, with what you have, from where you are." (and of course, enjoy the journey!) :D Wishing you all a beautiful day!! <3
Gina, I really appreciate your comments and encouragement. I really have to modernize my thinking. I still think in terms of what's out there creatively. The comments I have received from you, Sean and Maria make me realize that I have the ability to create the opportunities I am seeking. That's a major creative shift in thinking for me, but one that I gratefully welcome. Thanks again...IJ
you so welcome x
absolutely :) go get 'em!! ;)
