How about Hitfilm? I think it already got so fire plugins build in.
If you have the patience to learn a new program. Blender is the way to go.
Blender and Hitfilm are great apps. If you are looking for something more powerful in compositing VFX for free, then Natron (www.natron.fr) is a good option. You can also become a member of NatronNation (https://www.facebook.com/groups/NatronNation/). It is a community of 2D/3D vfx artist that uses the software.
