Is there going to be a problem with either festivals or distributors if i release actors reel material to them prior to our premier or distribution? I want to provide my actors with reel, but I don't want to risk our premier at a key festival or losing distribution because I have let out pieces of the film prior to release. ASAP! Let me know what you know, please! Melody

It always helps to wait until after you have secured distribution. Its not a necessity, but better safe than sorry. You can't control your content release when all of your talent is doing it.

When I produce an audition or Actor’s reel – it’s theirs to do with it as they see fit. When I produce shorts for the festival circuit, I include the actor’s reel (with permission of course) in the “making of” segment. Never had a problem with it so far.

Thank you. I decided to let tiny pieces of reel out, quick clips that don't show any of the story.
Melody, I think that’s totally acceptable. The actor’s reel is made for their benefit and as such, they’re free to use it however. As to protecting your story – I’m not quite so secretive. As a film reviewer for a few festivals, it matters not to me. But frankly, it’s your call.
