Screenwriting : What genre needs a comeback? by Matthew B. Morrell

Matthew B. Morrell

What genre needs a comeback?

Sure, we need more original stories, but what genre specifically should be brought back? Or, maybe we're happy that nearly every genre is being equally mined for content? Thoughts? Feelings? Let's talk about it?

D Marcus

What genre is absent? Even the Western and the Musical keep popping up.

William Martell

Nudist camp movies?

D Marcus

I've often wondered about that. Romance novels are very popular yet none of them have been adapted into movies. Is that an untapped market?

Mark ONeill

Noir detective stories that show the darker side of life in corporate America.

Phillip E. Hardy, "The Real Deal"

Matthew: I'm a big fan of westerns and the good ones are few and extremely far between. I'd like to see one from someone like Walter Hill or director Clint Eastwood. I've also heard via W. Earl Brow that there may be a Deadwood movie in the works.

Bill Costantini

With the exception of old-fashioned westerns that Phillip (and myself) are big fans of, I don't think any other genre is under-represented. If you look at the over 700 films released in American theaters this year, all of the genres (except old-fashioned westerns) are pretty well-represented. Even Romantic Comedies continue to be made - which for the most part can't seem to draw a significant enough audience anymore. As an aside, what is worthy to note is how many formulaic genre films with prominent actors/directors/producers absolutely tanked at the U.S. box office this year. I mean...absolutely bombed. It's no wonder why the major and mini studios are concentrating on the types of movies that they are putting their big dollars on, and will continue to focus on in the upcoming years.

Mark ONeill

Definitely more nudist camp westerns

Matthew B. Morrell

@Phillip E. Hardy There have been a few good westerns, Appaloosa (2008) with Ed Harris comes to mind. I suppose there aren't many good western films out there in the forefront especially after The Lone Ranger tanked. Although not technically a true western, but the genre is definitely not a popular as it once was. Maybe post millennials aren't as interested in America's past? I would like to see a Deadwood movie though, that was a pretty awesome series. @Patricia Zell Don't think I'd rely on Hollywood for the next great romance film. All the best of luck to you though if you can create a profitable Romance that feels genuine, and real, etc... That would be something to look forward to.

Steven Harris Anzelowitz

How about a good old fashioned Space Western. Like" Outland "with Sean Connery.

Phil Richards

Westerns and noir stories set in the 1940's and 50's.

Geoffrey Calhoun

I did a serious drama in the body swap genre. Which is usually reserved for the comedy realm. Unfortunate you'll find most people aren't interested in creative twists on old formulas. They don't want to risk losing profit by being in uncharted waters. I try to do a new twist on tired genes because it makes me a better writer.
