New with to Murder a Saint

Hello, I'm new to Stage 32 and looking for advice. I wrote a series of mystery novels which became quite popular and won a Writer's Digest award last year. The high volume of sales and award led to a seven year audio deal with ACX. I also recieved a request from a screen writer to adapt the first two books in the series to shop around. I also recieved a request from a small filmmaker to shoot a pilot. I have not taken either deal, not sure which is better. If I should hold out for a better option. Some people say I jumped in too quick with my audio deal and should have held out for more. Would love some guidance. Thank you.

Richard "RB" Botto

Hey Nicole...Almost impossible to offer guidance without knowing more details. As a screenwriter, I never sign a free option agreement and if it's a paid one, I make sure I'm diving deep into the plans of the person or company offering me the deal. For me, so many things go into making the decision beyond money - reputation, ability to deliver, track record, etc. Just some things to think about or explore with those who have shown interest.

Wow Rich! Thank you for taking the time to get back to me. There is much more to each offer, too much to put up in a forum. My gut tells me neither of these are quite right. Do you recommend getting an agent to handle sub rights? I signed the audio contract without one. Also, one thing I wondered with the screen writer offer don't most production companies hire their own screen writer?

Richard "RB" Botto

You are very welcome, Nicole. I might suggest an attorney rather than an agent if you're talking deal points, or if you are seriously considering one of the deals. As to the screenwriting question, every situation is different. For example, I am in the process of optioning a work that I plan to write the screenplay on. I will also attached as a producer, but we (the other producer and I) are already in talks with some other production companies interested in taking on the film. It truly all depends.

RB. I needed that info for this week. Thanks Tal.

Glad to know it's not just me Talence.Good Luck to you.

You are not alone. And yes get repped by someone well vetted first. On the other hand I narrate for ACX. :). XoT

ACX paid for the production of my audiobooks and it turned out great! The actors and actresses to choose from were so amazing too. So far working without rep has been no problem, I wonder if direct to talent is the future of the entertainment industry.

Hi Nicole, I have some experience in this regard and will be happy to share it with you privately. I'll add you to my network.
