Screenwriting : Technicality by Annie Mac

Technicality

"...Biker X, 22, built, clad in black studded leather, gives a push to Y , 20, whose green eyes are shaded by a western Stetson hat with a red leather band..." How many of you, screenwriters would know what a Setson hat is or looks like? And what kind of man would it connote? BTW, those are not trick questions :o) Thanks

Jody Ellis

If it was necessary to describe their hat, I'd probably say "large cowboy hat". And eye color isn't relevent, should be removed completely.

Dawn Murrell

I know what a Stetson is! There is even a cologne named after it! Maybe because I was born in Texas and I have lived in Kentucky and Tennessee but I can see (and smell) a very outdoorsy, cowboy looking man similar to the Marlboro man in the old cigarette commercials... is that right?

Annie Mac

Thanks, friends for your help! DAWN is right on! DAN -- you could be absolutely right, except that in this case, both the hat and the color of the eyes are an important part of the plot. JODY, you're also correct, except that other characters in this story wear cowboy hats.

Jody Ellis

In that case, I think most people have an idea as to what a Stetson is. Just curious though, how is eye color an important part of the plot?

Annie Mac

Jody, in a nutshell, there is a question of paternity, the child in question has also green eyes. Peter, I stand corrected, it should not be western Stetson.

Kathleen Stevens

Hi, A Stetson I believe is a type of cowboy hat, large, and light brown in colour. It would connote a cowboy if in the era of Westerns!

Annie Mac

Peter, by I stand corrected, I meant, I realize that a "western Stetson" is redundant. I'm curious what would be the spelling mistake?

Annie Mac

Kathleen, no it's not at the time of Westerns, but the character wants to project this image.

Annie Mac

Yes, Peter, there definitely is a problem with digital communication -- as my daughter would say LOL

Bill Costantini

Well missie...I reckon that the cowpokes of old...like my daddy, my grand-daddy, and my daddy's grand-daddy, when they were above snakes and not cold as a wagon tire....RIP.....they woulda been wearing them there Stetsons....even when they was a barkin' at the knot on a barrel fever. But a youngun like me...even when I gots my best bib and tucker on....and looks like the biggest toad in the puddle....and ain't bellying through the bush or the California collar or the Crowbar hotel....I prefer the Resistol Rio, size 7.

Kat Lynne

Hi, What is happening with your newest achievement as a finalist?

Annie Mac

Bill, a Resistol Rio, hey, that's ma kinda guy!! Thanks pal for the levity you always bring to those links. Kat, what film are you referring to? I've had several that reached some heights.

Kat Lynne

Hi Annie, What script are you working with now that you feel could be in production soon?

Annie Mac

My short LEMON TWIST, should be. Waiting for the right person to take it on! Of my features, Faith on the Run, is the closest, but, believe it or not, I'm still working on the last pass. How about you?
