Cinematography : iPhone cinematography experience? by Mike Chinea

iPhone cinematography experience?

So I bought the Filmic Pro app and the MM-VE001 mic kit for my iPhone 6+ and shot a day's worth, about 15 minutes worth of a short doc. The plus side was crystal clear shots and really good sound. The negative for me was the uploading and clearing the memory. It took over 24 hours for my iPhone to release the memory so I can shoot again. I don't think shooting a movie with iPhone is for me after all and I am wondering if anybody here can chime in with any thoughts and/or experiences.

Would you be willing to share some of the footage? That would be interesting to see.

Mike Chinea

You bet. I'll post a link soon.

Nelle Nelle

Thanks! I think that'd be very helpful to see.

Here a link to a small piece. Should be enough to get an idea. Notice the changing focus and aperture. Slow and steady would have work a lot better. BTW My editor wants to strangle me for not slating any of the shots. https://youtu.be/4CE-m-Spppk

Thanks for sharing Mike! It's pretty good actually. Very clear

Slightly different perspective at the very beginning of my filmmaking endeavors - I've filmed two shorts with an iPad mini, Filmic Pro, Pinnacle Studio, and a few other apps. While I am pleased with the outcome, the lack of credible information for shooting with the iOS platform can be frustrating. Much is rah-rah with little objective information. Technical support for the specialty apps is non-existent and the App Store's lack of responding to inquiries for refunds is annoying. While I am building skills through the iOS platform, I am planning to migrate to a more traditional video capture approach.

WTG William. Right now it seems a lot of trial and error and then again isn't that what filmmaking is all about? There is a new movie RIDE 9 shot with 3 or 4 iPhone 6S 4K.

Mike - Trial and error, yes. But more with learning to block, compose, light, capture sound, post-production, etc. But credible information and tools which work as advertised, or refunded promptly, would help significantly. Thanks for the update on RIDE 9 and will look for same. Best to Mike and All, Bill
