Stanley Kubrick, Andrei Tarkovsky, Robert Bresson, Ingmar Bergman...these are some of the names that come to mind when we think of masters of film. Who in your opinions are contemporary masters of film, those living today--let's step outside the box and think of "master" not like a "Picasso" of film but those who keep elevating film to a new level. I will share my list in just a bit!

List of today's filmmakers I feel accomplish "masterly" work in film: Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Steve McQueen, Martin Scorsese, Wong Kar-wai, David Lynch, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, Terrence Malick, Nicolas Winding Refn, Claire Denis, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Tsai Ming-liang, Joel and Ethan Coen,, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and I just realized, lucky for us, there's more to include. A first feature filmmaker that I have my eyes on is Robert Eggers, the director of The Witch. His film just felt like a veteran of filmmaking directed it. Highly recommended!
