Filmmaking / Directing : RB's April Challenge (day 15) by Geoff Hall

RB's April Challenge (day 15)

I came across this video of Quentin Tarantino interviews from those lovely No Film School people. "The Quentin Tarantino Approach to Becoming a Successful Filmmaker" I think for me the standouts are numbers 5 and 8. - The number 1 skill as a director: Being able to explain your vision - Keep reinventing yourself and your art When I think of artists from other mediums like music, I see the reinvention of David Bowie and Madonna. Who for you as filmmakers, other than Tarantino of course, excel in this reinvention? I think I aspire to this spirit of imaginative artistry. When I look at someone like Tarkovsky, he covered different genres (war, sci-fi, historical biopic and what I'd call poetic). Is it important today not to get stuck in the same genre, not to be always the Rom-Com Director, or the Horror writer? http://nofilmschool.com/2016/04/quentin-tarantino-approach-becoming-succ...

Richard "RB" Botto

Had the opportunity to read this the other day. Some great points. Thanks for sharing!

Geoff Hall

@RB, from this side of my career, it's difficult to see how it will pan out with regard to reinvention, but I can sense in my writing that the potential to do it is there.

Richard "RB" Botto

It all starts from within. I think reinvention can happen at any time.

Zoey Lee

So inspiring! TYSM! :)

Shawn Speake

Strong post. I'm also a musician so I always apply music business fundamentals to the movie business. I moved to Denver to reinvent myself, my career and roll with wiser Creatives. So far - so good :)

Geoff Hall

@RB As someone once told me, all the best reinventions start from within and not by just changing the externals, like fashion, or mannerisms. I look forward to the process and my future selves!

Shawn Speake

Totally agree, Geoff. I should have included that component in my post because I'm doin' both - always attempting to think on a higher level - always looking to improve weak links. My bad for leavin' that out!

Geoff Hall

Hi @Shawn, no worries. I think we are entrering the age of the filmmaker as brand and therefore as with my musical examples, we need to be able to plot our path with serious intent. I suppose it should all be a part of our business plan! Now that would make an interesting read!
