Audition Nerves

Hello all, So as Im preparing for an audition it got me thinking, what approaches or advice is there to reduce the nerves. As you can imagine theres a vast amount of information but I found the tips on Backstage to be useful: http://www.backstage.com/advice-for-actors/backstage-experts/4-solutions... Ide be interested in hearing how others deal with nerves?

One of my favorite stories about nerves and auditioning comes from Brian Cranston. He had been auditioning for years without much success. One day he simply asked himself if he was going out for too many things. He decided that he was spreading himself too thin and, as a result, was not giving each audition his full and honest attention. He decided to narrow his search and double up the intensity. He went into each audition more prepared than before. Then he asked himself "Did I give my best? Did I do everything to prepare?" If he was satisfied with his prep and effort, he just let it go. He controlled what he could control. And, lo and behold, the offers started pouring in. Give an honest effort, prepare until you're satisfied.

Thanks RB, always love Bryan Cranston. I couldn't agree with you more, I know I've done everything I can for my audition tomorrow. Just got to go in there and give it hell. Thanks for creating a place where I finally found myself. Hope I get he chance to meet you one day.

Hi Tony, recently I've gotten into listening to meditation podcasts that encourage breathing and focus - either on my way there, or even in the waiting room if there's a long wait. I've found I need to stay off of my phone once I arrive there -- all that email/social media stuff gives me ADD that I feel doesn't help me. Break a leg tomorrow!

Agree, phone goes on silent and into the bag. I plan on listening to music on the way in. Love me some rock

World gets smaller by the day, Tony. Sure we'll cross paths at some point!

That's some terrific advice, Uma. Tune out the distractions. Stay focused on the task at hand. The outside world will be there when you're finished.

For me, I've found that my experience in martial arts has helped me focus better and calm myself during auditions. Tournament competition taught me how to stay relaxed and focused. I figure that since no one is trying to knock me out in the audition room, it's not as stressful. If you can do something like meditation, yoga, or martial arts, it will help center you and take your focus off yourself and instead focus outward.
