Introduce Yourself : Drone Cinematographer by Charles G. Masi

Drone Cinematographer

I've been on Stage 32 for quite a while, but I'm taking this opportunity to introduce a new service I've just started offering: drone cinematography. That is the art of using camera-equipped UAVs to get cinematic effects more easily, simply, and inexpensively than possible with other techniques, such as boom cameras, dolly cameras, or helicopters. It is even possible to capture shots that couldn't be done otherwise. To see a demo video, check out my website at http://masiaviation.com. An important consideration when thinking about using drones on your film set are the legal aspects. The Federal laws regarding commercial drone use changed radically at the end of August 2016. I put up a page on the website highlighting the sections of the new law (14 CFR Part 107) that most directly affect film makers. I also added a link to the FAA website that gives the full text of Part 107. If you're thinking about incorporating drone cinematography into your next film production, or you're even mildly curious about it, please feel free to visit the website. If you still have questions, there's a contact page where you can reach me by email directly.

Thanks for sharing, Charles! I worked for a freelancer who did drone shoots awhile back, so I know how tricky they can be. Thanks for sharing your expertise - and consider posting in a few of our other lounges to help people see this info as well!

Drone cinematography is no joke. Especially with all the new regulations. Thanks for sharing your site and resources, I'm sure many will find it very beneficial.

If you think there are limits to what can be done with a camera drone, check out the 13-min narrative film produced by drone manufacturer DJI at https://youtu.be/4TbmxBAOvu8 The thing was ostensibly shot entirely with a DJI Inspire 2. They didn't just fly the thing around, though. There's a lot more to it than that. To get an idea of what it takes to get some of these shots, DJI has also released a "behind the scenes" video.
