Anything Goes : What do you Google? by Olya Kornienko

What do you Google?

I am doing some research at the moment and would like to ask: what do you Google about? I understand that we use Google to find out about pretty much anything but when it comes to your business/profession, what do you look for? What are your main interests? What blogs, websites do you visit on a regular basis? Or what magazines or newspapers (online and offline) do you read? Thank you.

Richard "RB" Botto

As I like to say, Google is your friend. I certainly use it all the time for research on a variety of film related subjects. As it relates to producing, I read the trades every morning. And although I love doing so, as an actor, writer and producer, I commit to it as a job.

Stig Pfau

With Google, I search a lot for "how to make" information and background research. E.g. How to make video effects, how to place lights, how to shoot ... a.s.o. Besides of some magazines I'm on Pinterest (research, howtos and insparation); YouTube, of course, for howtos, elearning, behind the scenes, ...) I read some German magazines (Chip Photo & Video e.g.) you may not know ;-) and several international magazines (Pictures, Videomaker, Photography Week, ...)

Olya Kornienko

Thanks so much, RB and Stig! Thank you, Stig for being very specific. That helps a lot. RB, would you mind to share what exactly do read every morning? What do you like to read the most and what do you type in Google search box? Thanks so much again

Olya Kornienko

And no, Stig, I don't know about German magazines you mentioned about... Yes, my favourite search would start "how to ....". Great to know that you are on Pinterest as well. I am trying to figure what social media to go for. I love love YouTube. I found that a lot of people use Facebook, even though I mainly only use groups. But Pinterest, it seems, is something that I should explore as well.

@OK Why post this here? What does it have to do with producing or even filmmaking in general? A fluff post post more suited to Anything Goes as it has nothing to do the nuts 'n 'bolts of the film industry.

Olya Kornienko

Hi JD. Thanks for your comment. As I mentioned I am doing research. I am interested in the producers' opinions, not "anything goes" opinions. That's the reason I posted it here. I am also thinking of maybe asking directors and scriptwriters. But at the moment producers and their opinions are my main interest. I hope that this will answer your question. And so you would know... this is called "research" not a " fluff post". I highly recommend you do your research as well before going into "nuts 'n' bolts".

JD Hartman

@OK What your post doesn't say: How do you use Google in your film/video production? A pre-production/planning tool, how does it help? Do you use it for problem solving during the shoot? What sort of issues has a Google search helped you overcome? Asking what magazines or blogs you read, has little to do with film and video Production and Producers. Your post reads more like a school assignment than a professional question.

Charles G. Masi

Interesting question. As a veteran multimedia artist and journalist, I have an extensive network to tap into for information, but I often tap Google to connect to: * sources I have used before, but haven't yet added to Favorites * sources of information for new knowledge areas * answers to various questions of a general nature * translations of lines of dialog to foreign languages in scripts I'm writing At this point, I'm down to one or two searches per day.

Olya Kornienko

Thank you very much, Charles, for such structured answer. Very much appreciated.

Samantha Belle

I look for things like how to effectively use social media, advice kind of articles! Sometimes I'll YouTube some of the same topics so I can see and hear the information as well as read it!

Olya Kornienko

Omg, Samantha! Thank you so much for your answer. I was so hoping that I would get women commenting too! And so good to see that you are looking for social media and you are on YouTube. Great! This confirms me wanting to go for YouTube as my primary social media platform. Thank you thank you

Suzanne Bronson

I read articles from THR, Variety, watch youtube videos with actor interviews. I google myself on a regular basis to see what pops up (I'm #1). Offline I read EW, Elle, O, Instyle and visit the library regularly.

Olya Kornienko

Thank you so much, Suzanne! This is awesome insight for me. I love Variety too! Wow #1! That's so cool! Congratulations! (can I have any more "!" over here..) :) Thanks a lot again.
