I've started filming a fan film with a producer, who trying to follow legal guidelines, where cast and crew are not paid. Does sound normal? I would love to pay everyone, but do not want to be sued. The whole "no profit to made from this production" could be interpreted in several ways. Does anyone have any experience with fan films?
Fan films lend themselves to works of love. No one anticipates suing one another, but at the very least, look into GL insurance (someone breaks an ankle, pokes an eye out, etc.). Appeal to the fan base to meet the goal for the expense of GL insurance in an IndieGoGo/Kickstarter campaign. Better safe than sorry.
Might want to check with the owner of the property before you put a lot of time and effort into something which may be pulled from public view. It has happened with several films based on Nintendo games. On the other hand, it would be fun, experience, and something to just hone your skills... Just be ready for a cease and desist, especially if you get a lot of attention.
thanks for the feedback guys! appreciate it. I'll look into both of those things. I hv general liability, but will check specifics. Location release is a great idea. thank you.
