You cannot fight against the temp track if it´s coming from Strauss

I don´t know if many of you know this but, originally, Alex North (15 Oscar nominations) was the composer chosen by Stanley Kubrick to score one of his most iconic films: 2001: A Space Odyssey. He was discarded though (he didn´t know about until the very release of the movie), mainly because the director could not get over the temp tracks he was using: Johann Strauss II's best-known waltz, The Blue Danube and Richard Strauss tone poem Also sprach Zarathustra.

Listening to the "recreation" done by Michael Mclennan in Vimeo, is clear why. The movie lose completely its poetic and majestic tone. What do you think?

It's true. With some directors (Tarantino comes to mind) their sense of pacing lends itself to pre-existing music. Luckily for us film composers, that's usually not the case.

When directors use temp tracks of such great artists like johann strauss it takes a lot to make them accept the scene with a different score..
