Taking action on my own writing

Hi all,

I'm a writer who is wanting to take action on his work rather than try to get someone else to do it. I want to have something produced and completed for people to be able to watch when pitching not only my work but myself as a creative so I'm wondering what would be better, a proof of concept or a short film? A proof of concept in my mind is trailer-like or even a full scene that would give the viewer the general idea of the tone and genre of the eventual end product whereas a short film is a short story with a clear beginning and end. Anyone advice would be appreciated.

Great, soud great! Just do it!

I'd go with a short film. You can cast a wider net with a short film in film festivals. Plus a short film counts as a credit whereas a proof of concept doesn't. A credit will open doors with producers who only want to work with produced or experienced screenwriters. Definitely go with the short film.

Depends on your purpose. I believe a proof of concept is for selling of an idea, treatment or premise (ie. my idea/script is marketable and here's my stuff that shows how it could be marketed and sold) Short Film would be more to showcase your talents and sell you as either screenwriter/director, etc. with more of a goal of being hired/represented based on your talents. "Don't Breathe" director Fede Álvarez did the latter in 2009 with his short film "Ataque de Pánico!" (Panic Attack!) however "Lights Out" director David Sandberg actually shot a short film called "Lights Out" that became the springboard for the feature film later. Similar with the short film "Pixels" that was eventually made into a feature film of the same concept "Pixels". IMHO the "short film" avenue may be better because it can serve the purpose of a proof of concept as well as have it's own merits as a short film. I say this not having any actual experience and just my own opinion so others with actual experience may be better equipped to answer.

@Chad You can also use a short film based on a feature to market the feature film.

Short film. That way rather than showing the general idea of the tone and genre you show the world your skill at delivering the tone and genre.

Shawn Speake

a short

I think you have answered your own question. Do you want to prove a concept or make a movie? A short film last forever like a writing credit. I have a few shorts I made myself, here's a link. https://www.youtube.com/user/askfindbuy100

Thanks for all the advice people. I think I will go with a short. I have a few short scripts written as well as other ideas. A lot of the horror shorts I've watched on youtube are usually shot well but the endings are usually some really poor jump scare or make zero sense so I suppose my goal is to create a really effective and memorable short. Should be pretty damn simple...........
