Film Noir is as popular today as was with Warners in the 1930s. Why not shoot your next crime drama Noir Style. You will need the following props, see pic. A 45 Revolver, a Men's Fedora, a glass of Rye Whiskey, safety matches, ticket to the fights, love letters from your mistress and a Gumshoe Office!

Welcome John!
Film is Art and a little fantasy never hurt any script. Noir if done right can be easier on Budgets as well. JV

Your ideas of current Distribution tactics although based on experience are troubling lest to say. MOONLIGHT is a beautiful film experience with a broad base appeal. Exploitation, Slasher, Violence and simply put Sleaze yes does sell but is a dime a dozen. I feel putting your energy toward subjects that benefit Society and dwelling on positivity can greatly enhance the possibility of a wider release Theatrical speaking. The Indie Art House Market is bigger than ever. The major Festival circuits give Filmmakers a fighting chance. What you Produce should be part of your soul and not a Title made simply to make money. We are at loggers head here.

Moonlight is absolutely exploitation - on a par with slashers - although I agree with your assessment of Vitaly's cynicism. (And still like Vitaly just fine.) :D
Well then, we started with my Subject "Film Noir" in contemporary Film today and have drifted into Distribution tactics with great arguments. I was hoping to spark interest in Indies that want to take a chance on this dark and dramatic genre. I think it would be a creative blast to shoot old school 16mm Black and White utilizing old Studio standards such as Warners in the 1930s. My idea is to re-make John Hustons FAT CITY (Stockton, CA) just voted one of the best NOIR Boxing films of all time by the Czar of Noir, Eddie Muller (TCM). Its a dark haunting mind study of a couple of real serious losers with Susan Tyrrell performance Oscar Nomination one of the best ever on screen. I think the film verbatim could be made over today. So what is your idea of NOIR? Its a theme and genre just as popular today as ever before. Trying to stir up interest in FILM NOIR, any takers? twitter@JEV1A

Raymond Chandler is my favorite author. I love Noir, and wish you well! :)
"What is your favorite NOIR Film?
Hello JV,I think Vitaly is simply trying to yank off any rose tinted perception of the otherwise gritty reality of the movie "business". For me that's a great wake up call...like a cold shower in winter : ) ! That, however, doesn't mean that you should give up your dream,it rather points out the formidable challenges ahead and prepares you for it.Everything is "impossible" until it is done for the first time.

I'm no authority on the genre, JV. If Sunset Blvd. is considered Noir, that's definitely in the top 10. Probably Maltese Falcon - which may be a trite answer, but I dig Dashiell Hammett's literary work too.

Both fantastic Noir Films! Sunset Blvd pulled off what nobody in Hollywood wanted to talk about.. the aging Actor syndrome. And Maltese Falcon was the beginning of one of the greatest Director's in Hollywood history John Huston. Remember Film Noir does not have to be any particular era. It can be a contemporary movie as well!
Ireke.. we need straight forward reality driven Distribution discussion. But we can't shun or shut out the Indie Filmmaker with dreams and aspirations to make his or her Film. Thank you for your comments so much.
This discussion has taken us well out of the realm of "Film Noir" as Art in Film. Your latest Release and progress is intriguing but not particularly on topic to my discussion. Can "Noir" make a comeback such as was the 30s, 40s and 50s? Can any modern day dark crime drama even be considered Noir? Twitter has millions of crazed Noir fans but this place is dead! You have written wonderful and useful inside information to production and distribution. It needs a Stage 32 front page! I give you my best.. Berlin is a wonderful festival in which I have been part of.
Wow, I love that term "Neo Noir" its a great hope along with yourself and so many others to return to a genre that dominated the Movie Industry in the past. Enjoy the weekend and thank you for your great incite and thoughts! JV
