Screenwriting : Male or Female Protags by Matthew H Emma

Matthew H Emma

Male or Female Protags

Who do you all think are more fun protagonists to write? Male or female protags. I have written both, but for whatever reason, I have more female protagonists and think they are more fun to write.

Isaac Barlow

I usually do the same. Most of my stories have female leads, with maybe one or two male leads. I'm attracted to strong females in life so I love to write strong females in my work.

John Michael German

Dear Matthew H Emma:

I do not think it's the gender of the protagonist or antagonist that makes them interesting, it is who they are and their character traits that make them interesting and fun to write; Basically you are bringing that character to life, and a lot of character traits could fit both male and female.

But to each their own, and if you are more passionate and drawn towards female protagonists, than your stories will end up being more gripping due to the fact that you are more engulfed into that character; That is always a good thing.

So keep on writing those female protagonists as I'm sure none of the actresses will complain.

Sincerely,

John German

Jenny Masterton

I don't find the gender of the character to make much difference to writing that character.

DL Miles

Typically it's easier for sale agents and reps to pre-sale or bank on a "A" or "B" list male actor mainly because of their international star-meter, but if you're looking for a niche or unique approach you should create a dynamic female protagonist that is flawed. The market is constantly changing as to what is bankable and unique female characters are on the rise.

Craig D Griffiths

I choose a gender based on the characters reaction style. Woman and men approach problems differently. I choose the most interesting for the story.

Matthew H Emma

DL you raise a great point and thanks for the insight. I would say my lady protags are dynamic and most certainly flawed.

Bill Costantini

To answer your original question....it's all fun!

Matthew H Emma

Like your philosophy Bill.

Tayo Akinsipe

I don't think the gender matters. I believe the personality matters more. At the same time i think giving a female character a personality or type or role that is normally male is very interesting and vice versa

Bill Albert

Like you I most often have female protagonists. It just come down to being more of a challenge. When I was in college they kept saying to just write a male character and then change the name to a female. I never, ever, ever, once did that.
