We have two productions underway currently. Several of my crew have brought up to me that we should be seeking product placement in our films. One is a short and I honestly don't see how that might benefit a company. The other is a television pilot for a series. Maybe with that there is. Does anyone have any experience with this? Advice? Thank you!

If your pilot went to an actual series you'd have a chance, but otherwise product placement is very difficult to get. The only exception might be if you had a strong relationship with someone in a company's marketing department.
With indie film there's more opportunity, particularly with locally based companies that can see a direct benefit to their business. I've gotten results on a Hawaii-based shoot -- 14 free roundtrip airline tickets plus free North Shore hotel/food -- but only because I marched into the manager's office in both cases, slapped a script on their desk, promised them end credits, and told them how my little film could help their business.

Short films that go through the film festivals still make a good place for people to get the word out about a service or product they offer. It may not be as big as a TV shot but it is still promotion... who knows the short could do very well with audiences and may even grow past the TV opportunity. Just a thought.

Rich, they might present "a good place" to showcase a product, but there's a world of difference between that and actuallly getting product placement funding. Can you name three recent shorts that've gotten product placement money?

Nope, in fact most companies ask who is attached to the product or who is directing. You may get product from them as props for the project. That is easier than funding but when you are looking for funding you should try every angle. you do, after all, miss 100% of the opportunities you never try for.
