It boggles my mind how 6 months have gone by so fast, but here I am in term 4 of the VFS Sound Design for Visual Media Program.
I came into this having never opened ProTools, and never worked in film. I had a good understanding of music and live theatre coming into this, but that's about it.
6 months down the road and I cannot even begin to describe the amount I have learned, both about the industry and about myself. I'm now working on a freelance feature film with some friends in class, have gotten contacts for other jobs in post and production sound, and am feeling confident that I made the right decision in coming here.
I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I applied for this program, but I know for a fact that this is where I want to be. I have 6 more months of the Sound Design program left, and I'm planning on staying in Vancouver for work. What I want to specialize in, exactly, is still up in the air, as I'm loving almost everything I'm doing here. Production sound has its own challenges that are fun to understand and overcome. I love the idea of sound design and just getting to /make stuff./ Foley is incredibly entertaining and satisfies the percussionist side of me by getting to hit things to make fun noises. Essentially, it's not feeling like a job to me right now - this is fun.
