Introduce Yourself : I'm making a transition! by Keith Murphy

I'm making a transition!

Hi Everyone,

I'm a 30+ year Camera Operator and Steadicam Operator based out of Toronto and I'm in the process of transitioning into Directing. In the new year after helping numerous friends and acquaintances make their first films I will be Producing and Directing my first short. "Liam and May" is set in Dublin in 1938 less than a year before the outbreak of WW2. Ireland at that point in history is a very young Republic and both the Allies and Axis forces want access to Europe's most western point. Liam is an Irish Intelligence Officer and May his wife is a very high profile socialite Irish Opera Soprano. Theirs is a difficult relationship.

Once made, this short will lead to the making of the full length script and if things go as planned more Directing opportunities.

Congratulations on making the transition to directing! What inspired you to take the leap?

Keith Murphy

I've always felt my position as the Camera Operator is such a privileged place, I'm with the actors as the bring their characters to life and tell the story. For me it's a natural extension of what I've done my whole life and that's storytelling.

Hi Keith, I ended up the other way round in some way, started as a director, but then found a need to direct the camera more creatively, my work was judged by a panel and deemed worthy for me to join the ranks of BAFTA crew back in April 2015 due to my work as a DP, but, I prefer to direct the cast, you wont regret it

Keith Murphy

Thanks for the encouraging words Rick.

Congratulations on making the career transition, Keith. If I finding the right music for your work is a concern, I'm happy to see if I can be of service.
