Financing / Crowdfunding : Any suggestions? by Anna Ebell

Any suggestions?

This is my first time fundraising and I'm trying to raise a small budget for a Hollyshorts entry. I have a facebook page and an Indiegogo page. Open to ideas and suggestions on how to reach out and connect with people who like to help fund small independent filmmakers. I am also open to people reviewing what I am doing and taking critique. Thanks!

I supported on Kickstarter. For me I think the best entries are the ones with a video and a good profile.

I recommend RB's book! https://www.amazon.com/Crowdsourcing-Filmmakers-American-Market-Presents/dp/1138849898/ref=mt_paperback?_encoding=UTF8&me=https://www.amazon.com/Crowdsourcing-Filmmakers-American-Market-Presents/dp/1138849898/ref=mt_paperback?_encoding=UTF8&me=

I attended Hollyshorts last year. It's an excellent festival.

Thanks Dan, I am doing that, our team is making an entry. I offered to help with fundraising. I'm looking for places to promote our project besides the two I mentioned.

Maybe trying getting your feet wet with 48hours?

James. I saw Richard Botto last weekend at the Seattle Film Summit and got an autographed copy of this book. It's amazing! The summit was so inspiring and why I found this place.

Thanks, Dan, wonderful suggestions. I agree if people don't care about the project and then why would they contribute.

Anna Ebell

Dan, I love it. Make people get to know who we are as people and they'll be more inclined to want to see what we do.

Anna - Do you have a worthy script? Is it available anywhere? Do you have a budget in mind? Has it been cast? Do you have locations? Do you have a competent crew? Are you just fishing for money or do you actually have a project pretty ready to go. Is it intended as a profit making project or is it for getting your foot in the film industry door? There are lots & lots of questions - just what is it you're seeking?

Anna Ebell

We have all of the above and are finalizing locations and dates for the cast and crew. We are looking for funding to cover permits, catering/craft services, and lighting and other equipment rentals. Some for marketing.

Anna - lets just cut to the chase here. I'm not trying to be offensive but I am being inquisitive - for you, me and others treading the same path. You say you have a worthy script - other than you, who says so? Is it a FL or short? You have cast & crew - has your Director completed a script analysis to tell you the number of shooting days? The budget needs to know how long you need craft services (and the per person cost.) Do you have the day rates from the rental houses?

You want someone else's money to fund your project/dream. If I, or anyone else, loans you the money - what assurances can you provide that guarantees at least a return of capital? Most/all investors want a return on invested capital too. Do you have a business plan/marketing program? Do you have any collateral? Have you ever done this before - maybe it's time you get out your own credit card if you are really convinced of the project viability. If you're not convinced, how do you plan to convince others?

Anna Ebell

Doug Nelson I'm not offended at all and thank you for taking the time to ask me for more detail.

We have a short that we are hoping to submit to the HollyShorts Film Festival. We recently submitted a short for HBO Asia Pacific Competition. Our screenwriter works with a professional script consultant in LA and we felt the message was strong enough to be a contender. We went through the same process with her previous script. We have our cast, crew and all but two locations locked down. Only two need permitting. We hope to have it completed within 6 days of shooting. I have personally donated $2K to assist with permits and craft services but we need more than that to cover the whole production including some rental equipment. We do have a marketing plan and hope to be able to drive enough traffic to our igg and S&S pages. We have assembled a very talented crew that has worked on several other projects together including a feature film currently in post.

We are doing a first round of funding with friends and family hoping we get enough small donations to cover our needs. I am not new to markting but I am new to marketing in the film industry and would like to know how best to stand out from the crowd. We modelled our campaign similar to what others are doing, but as you may recall getting out the gate the first few times is the greatest challenge if you don't have the right connections. We are hoping that her films place well in the festivals which would help attract more serious financing and exposure for future projects.

We are trying to promote #WomenInFilm, and this young woman director that I am supporting for the second time has some great and poignant stories to tell.

I get the impression that you're trying to support a specific cause. It sounds admirable but in so doing you limit your market appeal to 'the choir' so to speak and that limits your project's marketability. You're butt deep in the project now - this is not the time to be bringing others into it. You're gonna have to tough it out yourself - and you'll be much stronger for doing so.

Play the festivals carefully looking for those sympathetic to your cause. All the best wishes to you.
