Acting : How to act by Rutger Oosterhoff

How to act

Helen Mirren: "Never act in front of a mirror. You are doing the exact opposite of what acting is about. Acting is all about what is happening within you. It doesn't matter what is happening on your face."

Interesting!

Wayne Jarman

Yes, an interesting statement. I don't agree with the statement, though. The actor needs to project the emotion that is going on inside and the mirror is an excellent way to confirm that the face is doing just that. I worked, for many years, with a Director who encouraged his actors to go home and practice in front of a mirror.

If the actor/actress understands the emotion then I guess "what is going on inside" is autmatically projected to the outer world, like in real life. If we are angry we don,t have a happy face... It gets more difficult when actors/actresses have to use facial expressions that they never used in real life. Then it can be handy to practise in front of a mirror. You now literally have to use/train facial muscles you did not know existed. But this being said by somebody that is not an actor. Just how I see it.
