Filmmaking / Directing : Foreign Language? by Dawna Sirard

Foreign Language?

I'm shooting a period film set in 1941 Eastern Poland. Wondering what everyone thinks about shooting it in English as opposed to the actual languages native to the time and place - Yiddish and German.

Who's your intended audience. Very few folks are fluent in Yiddish/German - that means subtitles. Subtitles means that the viewer is pulled down from the scene to read - that takes the viewer out of the action/storyline. Generally, I advise against subtitles but they can work in little snippets.
