For (traditional) 2D animation ToonBoom (https://www.toonboom.com/company/customer-productions) is used by many companies. A free alternative is opentoonz (used to be used by Studio Ghibli). For 3D animation - usually run into Maya or Autodesk 3Ds, Blender is the free alternative- (https://www.blender.org/ -- you can technically render 2D animation in Blender too). Naturally workflow, cashflow, Computer Specs. & Req. must be considered as well.
I had just finished my music video on after effects and video Copilot filmed on a nikon d3300 using a rode video mic and a zoom h4n recorder. I would also use toon boom and blender for your project.
