Accents in Acting

Many actors love working on accent as a layer of storytelling, but not all. Lately I have been doing a lot of thinking about this second group. If this is you, can you share with me the factors that are keeping you from jumping in with both feet? (Is it not knowing where to start? Not believing you have that ‘talent’ or a ‘good ear’? Not having a way to get past ‘stagey’ sounding accents? Not having access to a real accent coach? Fear that the accent will get in the way of the performance? Something else?)

I have not done accents for many years, when I was young and did Stage Acting I felt there was too much “Mystical Unicorn” attitude to being “Able” to deliver accents .......No “Guru” is needed to pull off an accent! Listen to children mimicking each other (who all have different accents).... Its natural and spontaneous. I did manage to pull off Cockney/Scottish/Tennessee for up to an hour, but enjoyed impersonating the characters without concentrating too much on myself. I don’t think people should veer towards OR against accents, try out different options using a walkman, the results may be surprising!
