I would love to act, but I don’t have an agent. I would love to act, but I’m not in SAG. I would love to act, but I’m broke. I would love to act, but I’m working nine-to-five. I would love to act, but everything is precast. I would love to act, but my agent never sends me out.
Did you get a pretty volatile list of negatives? It’s the “but” that keeps us behind. It’s what we use to avoid taking risk. We can’t take a risk and then immediately criticize and critique ourselves for taking it. The risk is the thing that counts in the end. I’ve used every one of the above excuses to keep me from acting. But I do know that each one is flimsy as a paper lantern and must be kicked under the carpet. What acting practice has begun to teach you is to act under all circumstances. Begin to practice your acting and the doors will start to swing open for you.
