Producing : What kind of producer are you? by Ricardo Rangel Jr

What kind of producer are you?

Hi producers. We all have different skills to bring to the table. Help me out:

-What "category" would put yourself in? (executive, line, story, etc)

-Where do you find yourself needing the most help? (networking, production, administrative, etc.)

-What do you look for in a producer partner?

-If a producer partner handled the paperwork aspects of the production, would that be of value to you? What else would be?

-What would you look for in such producer?

Shadow Dragu-Mihai, Esq., Ipg

I have been in industry since 1995, and often direct, with a hands-on background covering theater, unscripted, feature film and many genres and formats. Depending on the project, I work Line Producer or Supervising Producer (not XP except on my own projects; I don't normally look for finance on outside properties), and work in development as well. I always need more networking opportunities of course. As far as production is concerned, I look for strong coordinators who have a thorough and wholistic view of the production process and very evident brains. In a producing partner, I look for smarts, attention span, passion and an ability to integrate artistic/creative merits with production and financial realities.

Doug Nelson

I've been in & out of the film industry in one form or another since the late '60s. I've been a screenwriter, a staff writer, a line producer, a field producer all the way over to a PA and a boom pole mule. I don't see myself as being in any single category - wear whatever hat you need at that particular time & place to get the job done. I look to partner with doers more than talkers (I'm not looking to partner with anybody right now).

John Ellis

For me, the first thing I look for in potential partners is passion for the project. Do they love it as much (or more) than I do? In the indie world, it's common for producers (of any prefix) to go way above and beyond for a project, so they have to believe in it, first and foremost. And then, like Doug said, doer, not a talker. Hey, Pre-Producer Kay, maybe we could have a chat about the guys you know who know guys?

Raymond Zachariasse

I look for actors and crew, I help with the screenplay if needed, i collect all documents needed, I write a plan and a synopsis, I try to search for locations and try to look for funding. Basically I connect everyone. In a few cases I’m like a mentor. But I rather be a director or writer. The latter I’m doing also.
