Producing : Please elaborate for me if you would ... by Rod Seitz

Please elaborate for me if you would ...

Okay, I am a newbie to the whole screenwriting and movie business. I'm confused... I was under the impression that the producer was the person who finances a film. So, that is who I thought I should pitch my film to. from what I have gathered the producer is basically the Supervisor/General Manager over the process of making the film.

So I guess my question is, who is in charge of financing a film? Is it the Executive Producer? What do they do? Are they the person who finances the film or is it someone else?

Who should I be pitching my film to? I thought it was a producer apparently I'm wrong.

Doug Nelson

You're a writer: Let your Agent pitch your script to whoever; he/she will know where to pitch it. Why do you care about who comes up with the loot? That's not your job.

As I've mentioned in other forums, the first decision, Rod Seitz is who do you want to be? What role/career suits you? The answer to this question will inform all your other decisions. Being strictly a writer will determine one path, which Doug Nelson has accurately commented on. Writer/director has another path. Writer/indie producer, yet another path. Make that first decision and it will clarify, at least, the pertinent questions to ask.
