Introduce Yourself : All In by Karen "Kay" Ross

All In

Hey, all! I just moved to Los Angeles after working in the TV industry for a few years in the DC area. I have a BFA in Film & Video Production, have produced several short films and worked on plenty more. But my experience and enthusiasm haven't yet allowed me to do what I truly excel at - Creative Producing. It seems I'm playing the longest game of process of elimination and, since January of this year, have had more encouraging people enter my life than I have throughout my life. It's as if the Universe were strategically saying "it's time".

I tried working my way up from PA to PC, but UPM is not where I want to go; tried educational videos as bread and butter, but it took too much time away from my own films just to find clients; just finished teaching TV & Film production (including IB Film) to high schoolers, really bummed that it didn't work out, but it's for the best. Now I just want to finish writing my pilot for a series that I honestly believe producers will be clamoring over in the coming months. In a way, it's my legacy to my students that I was denied.

I've recently signed up for Stage32's Writer's Room, though have been a member for 4 years or so. It's been fantastic to have something weekly to keep me accountable and keep me energized. Even went to the meetup for screenwriters here in LA recently, met a few truly stellar female filmmakers, and feel more uplifted than ever.

At the end of the day, I'm always open to meeting new friends and willing to believe friends can be trusted with my babies (projects). Just remember that trust is earned. You never know if you can work with someone, but you definitely know how to make friends - here's how I've made all of my contacts in that last 3 months: I just talk to them like people, not like potential money bags.

Let's play a game! What guilty pleasure film do you love but no one else seems to understand its brilliance? Mine is a tie between Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002) and Penelope (2007).

i read confessions in high school and loved it very underrated movie sam rockwell's 2nd best film. personally i have way to many guilty pleasures just about anything from roger corman especially humanoids from the deep!!!!!!!

I've never heard of Humanoids from the Deep - I'll have to check it out! So glad someone else knows about Confessions - Sam Rockwell is such a solid actor, so engaging. Loved watching the behind the scenes of that film, too. It was George Clooney's directorial debut, so he took a lot of time (4 months) to develop his shot list and then took great pains to make in-camera transitions (such as a rotating stage or fast costume changes for the characters). It was truly a master class in using theater tricks to the benefit of film magic!

I am not sure I should admit why I feel guilty about the Matrix Trilogy. I was perfectly enamored by the first one. Then, watching the second one; the story started to seem a bit peculiar in terms of plausibility. Watching the third installment caused me to feel guilty and a little dirty.

As I have watched all three numerous times; I can now admit in public that the guilt comes from my envy of Neo and Trinity.

At the risk of oversharing here, I loved watching their love story unfold all the way to the scene where we actually get to see them do something physical. And envy the way they are devoted to each other so completely.

But more then that, I envy the way their characters looked in Costume. Both of them.

One some level, I would love to be able to pull off the skin tight catwoman suit Trinity wears. But would also love to be able to kungfu the crap out of someone while wearing the duster and sunglasses that Neo wears.

P.S. Your take on networking is extremely helpful to a guy like me. Not so much because I think people are potential moneybags. But because I am still learning how to be a good friend.

Janet Goodman

Well, I'm not sure of its brilliance or if it was well received by critics, but I watch Bad Times at the El Royale whenever it's shown on HBO and love it for all the character twists.
