How to find locations for free?

Hello all,

I've been lately researching locations and how to become a "good" location scout. I'm kinda a solo filmmaker, still a student so most (all) of my short films are no budget projects and I would like to know how to get locations for free if that's possible. I'm living in the UK and I'm from Spain so I don't know as many people as I do in Spain and it's much easier for me finding a location in Spain. Any tips?

For example, I want to film in a cabin lost in the woods, how could I find something like that for free? Or a real case, one of my short films' story happens in a basement but I don't know anyone who has a basement.

Usually an experienced producer with local connections - even a small-budget one - can bring these sorts of things. This is why you build a team, rather than just do everything yourself. Link up with a young, but experienced local producer and if nothing you will have someone else to bring things to the table. ;) Break Legs! GOD BLESS and STAY FRESH!!!

Sam Borowski Thank you for your advice, Sam. I'll try to find someone, I only know 1st-year students and it's quite difficult to find people who are into filmmaking or producing in this area, there are not even more than a facebook group where the last post was a couple of years ago. Thank you again :)

If you have a small footprint (quick shoot, little or no crew, handheld camera) you can shoot for free almost anywhere. If you must ask permission, the words "film student" are magical, gaining you sympathy and changing lots of attitudes, including law enforcement. I've shot in stores, bars, churches, schools, hospitals, houses, beaches, ocean piers, busy streets & alleys, and a chase scene through the downtown LA Greyhound station, all without a problem. On the other hand, if you're a shy, milquetoast kind of guy who finds it necessary to apologize for stepping out your door each morning, you might want to consider changing professions.
