Introduce Yourself : New/Old Screenwriter by Jean M. Knowlton

New/Old Screenwriter

I discussed an idea I had before for a project I would not be able to actually write. At present I'm actually working on a different one, a pilot for a TV series. I am older and have been interested in screenwriting for some time, but working full-time mostly as a legal secretary or court reporter/transcriber. I have taken some courses and read a lot of books but mostly my education would come from watching good movies and reading the scripts. It's so very helpful that Stage 32 offers us a chance to read Oscar-nominated scripts. I've written one script that reflected every amateur mistake possible, but that's how we learn. My current project involves an ex-Detroit blues disc jockey who has recently been widowed and inherited money. He uses it to buy a gas station/auto repair/convenience store that has housing above it. It is located near a national park and often homeless people are running from the park ranger and end up there, sitting at the bench, enjoying a beverage from a machine where he always leaves coins in the coin return. His hobby is refurbishing old automobiles. I have it set in the town where I live now because we are near a state park, which gave me the idea for the setting. He helps out kids who have aged out of the foster care system or who have escaped bad group homes and anyone who wanders into his path. He has a good group of friends, a librarian, music instructor, computer games creator who also teaches. I based most of the characters' personalities on my cats. I have some very interesting cats, so they made a perfect template for character development. I am older, should be retired but too broke so working two part-time transcription jobs from home.
