Anything Goes : John Robert Powers by Eric Gonzales

John Robert Powers

Does anyone know about this John Robert Powers school for modeling and acting? They had an ad somewhere and my wife was thinking about taking my daughters to some audition they are having.

Christopher Phillips

They’ve been around for awhile. There are many of these types of acting and modeling schools. You have to check them out and see what models or actors that have trained with them and are now working. These local modeling agencies used to make you pay to sign up with them and that money was usually for headshots and maybe training, but you still have to do a lot of work going out to auditions. So, check out how their program works and if they have connections to get your daughters started or if this is just going to be an expensive training program.

Thank you Christopher for your feedback, it is greatly appreciated.

What are you expecting to gain from them. What do they teach you? Who actually works there? Is it other students?

Philip Sedgwick

Years ago I was an instructor and photographer at a Patricia Stevens school. JRP was one of the major competitors. Where I worked, I actually wrote a couple of courses for them as what I was teaching seemed a little thin.

My thought would be that you ask to see a detailed curriculum from the school. See if it looks like it would help your daughters. Make sure it's rich enough content in whatever application best suits your daughters' aspirations. My instinct would be that for general poise and modeling, perhaps it would work. However, you might do better to seek out an acting teacher in your area, if their interest is more thespian.

There's a very good film festival in your town, San Antonio Film Festival, run by very helpful people. I would reckon they might be able to point you toward a good acting teacher/coach.

There are many schools of thought for acting. It would be good to research the various methods to see which is the most solid personality match for your daughters before laying out a chunk of cash. Most acting teachers I know will certainly have a sit down with you to see if you're a match.

Thank you Philip for your insight, we are in there process of looking into getting a personal teacher/ coach. I will definitely look into San Antonio Film Festival to see if they can point me in the right direction.
