Bad writing blamed for 'Capone' drama

Not the kind of review I was expecting with Tom Hardy as the lead. There's at least some constructive criticism here that might serve us drama writers.

I agree—an insightful critique to learn from.

DeNiro as Capone in The Untouchables will always be my favourite.

The washed up Hero attracts Actors. You can go back to Brando playing a washed up Boxer. Shane. Rocky. Rambo. The Wrestler. Darkest Hour. Irishman. A Star is Born.

Principle photography for Capone was finished 2 years ago. VOD release on a Tuesday is never a good sign

Thanks for posting Sam King! This just serves as a reminder to me of how difficult the craft of filmmaking is and how even the most talented artists can sometimes struggle. When we run into difficulties or feel our work failed to hit the mark, we can't beat ourselves up. It happens to everyone.

Vic Burns

They can blame the writer - but how many times do we hear of executives and directors interfering with the material until it is unrecognisable from the original? I know they own it and can do as they please, but I just wish they had more trust in writers like they do in TV.

Good points, Vic Burns

Those beady eyes of his are good for those roles, Owen Mowatt. lol

Louis Tete

Well, the writer also directed and edited the movie...kinda a domino effect.

Coreetta S Buchan

Poor direction, editing and misinterpretation of the script can make and incredible screenplay look like a terrible one. It's sad because writers are visually ceeative in expression but not everyone can realise its power in intepretation and portrayal of events. Write a great song and performing it badly cones to mind.

Cathy Alvarez

I recently re-watched Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and forgot TH was in it. He was much more enjoyable to watch than in Venom...

Brian Walsh

TH is brilliant in Peaky Blinders

Phillip E. Hardy, Prolifique

With most studio executives and their minions considering themselves quality raconteurs, I’m flabbergasted that any studio would spend 21 million dollars and attract A-list talent like Tom Hardy and Linda Cardellini to make a badly written movie about such a notoriously intriguing person as Al Capone. Who wouldn’t want to see a 47-year old Capone suffering from advanced dementia reflect upon the foul deeds of his criminal career. With most industry folk being cautious about pulling the trigger on a potential bomb, it’s a wonder a badly written movie ever gets made. Didn't they make a similar story in 1975?
