Introduce Yourself : Re-intro for June 2020 by Jerry Gill

Re-intro for June 2020

I'm a writer of pulp adventure fiction. I've been scrolling through and reading entries and understand why it feels so positive here. Everyone seems to always be doing something and I stopped counting how many have finished a project or won an award. I didn't win anything this week but I got something as good for a writer. Midwest Book Review emailed me about a kind of rare occurrence - they reviewed the entire series to date, 9 books. And the review blew me away, in a good way. Besides working on novel ten, I recently began working on my first screenplay based on the first book and the formating is driving me nuts.

Hey, Jerry Gill! My name is Kay, I'm the Community Manager here at Stage32. Nice to meet you! Congrats on the positive review! Hey, ANY good news is worth celebrating - it's the only way to keep up momentum!

Yeah, if you're used to novel writing, I'm sure screenwriting feels both inferior and infuriating. There are two rules I push for new screenwriters who aren't necessarily new to writing -

1) Remember who your audience is - and it's not the people in the theatre. You are writing something for actors, directors, production designers, composers, CamOps, etc. Which means you have to limit what you say to ONLY WHAT YOU ACTIVELY SEE AND HEAR (note "active" because of the active tense constantly in use). If you get stuck, try reading a script from a film/series you think is similar to what you're writing.

2) The purpose of Motion Pictures is ACTION - otherwise, we'd be writing stories about photographs. So, if there is no visible action, and tangible consequence, then it's probably not "cinematic" for anyone to want to watch it.

I'm sure you've already discovered the Authoring & Playwriting ( https://www.stage32.com/lounge/playwriting) and the Screenwriting (https://www.stage32.com/lounge/screenwriting) Lounges, but you should definitely jump in on the discussions in the Transmedia Lounge (https://www.stage32.com/lounge/transmedia). You're adapting a novel into another medium, but maybe you could start a conversation about what other mediums it could work in, which is perfect for Transmedia!

If you'd like more information about how to explore the Lounges to meet more members and network, please enjoy my most recent blog post:

Enjoy exploring the lounges, and don't forget to comment and respond to others’ posts, too! It's the best way to really connect!
