Introduce Yourself : Howdy, all! by Gael MacGregor

Gael MacGregor

Howdy, all!

I figured it was time to stop lurking and make more than a perfunctory greeting and actually connect. :)

I've been working in music supervision, coordination, and administration since 1998, first at a music supervision house, now as an indie. I'm also a musician/artist and author, so have a unique perspective on the needs and wants from both sides of the table.

In addition, I consult with filmmakers, artists, etc. on the business side of the biz, and how that impacts both the music composers, publishers, and artists. I can also get the creatives and bean counters to talk to one another, since I speak both "artist" and "suit". ;)

And here's your hint for the day:

The sooner you bring a music supervisor onto your project, the happier everyone will be. We help you from temping in music you can't afford -- bypassing the problematic "temp love". We can save you money and aggravation by preparing a full music breakdown with suggestions and estimated budgets for licensed music. Had you brought us in before production commenced, we could have steered you away from shooting a scene where a guy is singing a song on screen that cost you $15K, only to discover as you gave us the rough cut in post, that there was a public domain song perfect for the scene... meaning that $15K could have been used for the expensive piece of music you wanted but now can't afford (true story -- that really happened).

So feel free to connect -- whether you have music needs for your project, feel like chatting about the latest book you read, or want to swap recipes (I've got a killer chocolate chip cookie recipe I'm willing to share).

Be well, be happy, be kind.

Cheers!

Hey, Gael MacGregor! My name is Kay, I'm the Community Manager here at Stage32. Nice to meet you! I feel like this post has earned a sincere YASS, QUEEN! * long-distance high-five * I LOVE this advice to include the music supervisor early! I've said something similar about an editor, but for composing totally makes sense, too.

Would you do me a favor and start a conversation (or five) in the Filmmaking (https://www.stage32.com/lounge/directing) and Producing (https://www.stage32.com/lounge/producing) Lounges with this ABSOLUTE GOLD? You could definitely meet like-minded professionals in the Composing Lounge (https://www.stage32.com/lounge/composing) as well, but on this subject, it might feel a bit like preaching to the converted. HA!

If you'd like more information about how to explore the Lounges to meet more members and network, please enjoy my most recent blog post:

Enjoy exploring the lounges, and don't forget to comment and respond to others’ posts, too! It's the best way to really connect!
