Prinary: getting the facts righ.
Secundary: getting an original perspective on those facts.

Research is intended to broaden my understanding of a subject. Greater depth of understanding, yields greater veracity.
That's true whether or not I'm writing a historical/biographical piece, or total fantasy. (Because fantasy exists within a real world.)

It’s like any job trade. The more you know about the subject the better you’re gonna perform. For example, sports players study game tape of their opponents

Phillip, I LOVE doing research...and it helps me keep from falling flat on my face when I'm writing. As long as I can make sure I've got my facts straight about this or that subject, it helps.

Research chills me, can get lost in it for hours and it's vital to understand your story more even if don't end up using most of it. Occasionally I find a controversial topic to research both sides of warring factions to create a character in morally grey area who could force reader to swing either way.
