Screenwriting : Writing a photographic scene by Bager Kaya

Writing a photographic scene

Hello friends, I need your help with 3 scenes in a short film I just wrote. In the scene I am writing, the image in the frame is dull, like a photograph, but the sounds are alive and the sound of a normal scene like the scenes from the La Jetee (Chris Marker). How can I write such scenes, do you know any examples?

Christopher Phillips

Inside the room, seen through the psychedelic filter . A blurred image of vulgar yellow and indigo. A cacophony of sounds filters through.

The other way to do it is after the slug line just add something like: Filter - yellow. Or Filter - scratchy film grain.

Whatever is clear.

This is a discussion you should be having with your Director, the DP and the Editor. The Director brings a cinematic vision to the project, the DP is more practical in going about how to capture it and the Editor can figure out how to best incorporate it into the final project. You just write what you see.

Hi, Bager. Write what you see. Write what captures the tone, mood, and sense of what is happening. Keep it simple and clear. Suggest and hint at possibilities that any reader can visualize in their mind.

Here are a few line examples that come to mind:

The sky is an electric blue. The kind that lives in memories and dreams.

An obscure stream of unintelligible voices, noise, and movement can be heard.

A hazy image begins to take shape, gradually materializing to reveal a quaint street filled with townspeople.

Hope that helps!
