Introduce Yourself : If you could experience it again... by Brian Carlin

If you could experience it again...

Hello again Stage 32! I like to do an icebreaker here on Introduce Yourself weekend whenever possible. So here's one I thought of: If you could go back and experience a movie(s), TV series, or other creative work for the first time, which would you pick and why?

Here are some of mine: Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The thing about this film is that during the first act, you don't really know who the good guy is until The Terminator saves John Connor from the T-1000 in the mall. It would be great to enjoy that suspense again. Pulp Fiction: Getting to see the nonlinear storytelling and twists unfold again without knowing they're coming would be a lot of fun! And for TV, The Shield since it does a great job of showing the consequences of the characters' choices and having them lead to a satisfying conclusion.

Looking forward to hearing your choices. Happy New Year to you!

Karen "Kay" Ross

Hey, Brian Carlin! Happy New Year! So good to see you again!

Ooo, someone is leading the charge with those icebreakers, I LOVE IT!

Hmm... Jurrasic Park (although Jurrasic World gave me chills because same soundtrack in the cinema), Gladiator (because Hans Zimmer + Russell Crowe + "Strength & Honor" = Je Adore), The Matrix (because Trinity + Neo + Morpheus + Agent Smith = black leather trenchcoat in my closet), Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (because I was literally saying earlier today how I curled up in my seat and started growling at the screen in the cinema, so invested I was in the final fight), Good Will Hunting (because I saw it as a young person and could relate to the younger characters, but now I wonder how I might relate to the older two), Parasite (because camera language, so cinematic), Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (for the theatrical shots - in-camera transitions are so effing sick!), The Martian (because it might be my favorite film), Going by the Book (because it was surprisingly hilarious), Death to Smootchy (because I have never laughed so loud in a cinema with my mother sitting next to me)... and finally, Avatar the Last Airbender... because I love it.

Although, I like your answer about T2, so let's add that, too! I used to want to be Linda Hamilton LOL!

Brian Carlin

Karen, those are all great choices! Good Will Hunting would be a fun one to watch over again and experience the incredible script as well as Robin's performance for the first time. And as for T2, I agree with your fandom on Linda Hamilton, she owned the role and did such an amazing job - another reason why it would be fun to experience that one again!

Catalina Querida

This is a great idea! Since I miss movie theaters so much, Get Out, because it was just such a fun experience in the packed theater. I remember walking out and everyone just looking at each other like woah, that was tense. I'm so tired of all the movie theaters are dead discourse because the shared experience is just so beautiful.

Kathaleen M. Brewer

For me, it's Lonesome Dove. Anytime I'm traveling in states from Montana to Texas, I think of it. And of course writer McCarthy made all those characters memorable. Oh wait, Lonesome Dove was a TV series, not a feature... Guess after binge watching it again, it seemed like a feature. Dang, it seems so long since I was in a theater. MUD with Mathew McConoughy (sp?) comes to mind. PULP FICTION definitely surprised me.

Brian Carlin

Catalina and Natalie, I like your points regarding Get Out. Watching Peele's opening sequence with the music, imagery, and camera work is truly something special, and especially watching it unfold the first time. Kathaleen, like many filmmakers, I have a whole list of TV shows and films that I'll probably never complete, but I'll have to check out Lonesome Dove. I've also driven cross country (PA to WA), so I'll probably be reminded of Montana, Idaho, and western North Dakota.
