The Script - So You Want to Write a Screenplay?

Hi, I'd love your thoughts/input. Thanks!

LOGLINE: Hopeful, amateur screenwriters compete for an opportunity to make their original script into a major motion picture in a TV Talent Show format similar to The Voice.

FORMAT: Competition/Elimination Talent Show.

SYNOPSIS: Twelve (12) movie trailers and movie posters are created and shown in a movie theatre setting to the studio and television audience and a 4-member celebrity panel comprised of executive producers, directors, screenwriters and/or actors. Four movie genres are included in the competition (action, family, drama, comedy). The panel members are experts in one or more of the four movie genres and have read/approved/selected each of the 12 scripts beforehand.

The panel competes for three (3) scripts to evaluate and develop. The screenwriter chooses the panel member if more than one member competes for the script. Once selected, key scenes from each screenplay are shot. The clips are shown to the audience along with scenes from the movie-making process and back stories on the screenwriters and the celebrity panel members. The film clips (as well as the movie trailers and scripts) will also be available for viewing on the internet. A blog for the show is created by the Master of Ceremonies so audience members can comment on the scripts and generate a continuous dialogue.

Structured similar to your first film class, the show is both entertaining and instructional. To begin, the inciting incident scene (i.e., the catalyst of the movie) is shown in four big box office films to show the audience how a good inciting incident drives the story. Following this, the inciting incident scenes from the original scripts are shown for the audience to compare and vote on.

Each week, one script in each genre is eliminated until 3 scripts remain in Week 10. The audience selects the top 2 scripts in Week 11. The final episode reveals the winner of THE SCRIPT. The winning script will be made into a full-length major motion picture and have instant fans awaiting its debut.

Interesting concept. Is the market large enough? These 4 panel members - who are they and how much you gonna pay 'em? (if they are 'pros' that means they got day jobs.) There's a lot of little details to work out.

Hi Doug. Thanks for the thought-provoking comments. There are definitely details to work out. I sent it to MGM Mark Barnett but don't know if it actually reached him. People LOVE movies; I picture a ton of scenes from great movies to be part of the show (like a film class) so the entertainment factor is there. I think the market is large enough. Also the human interest stories are what co-drives shows like The Voice. Every contestant will have a unique story. The Panel would be similar to the status of Idol or Voice. They have a stake in trying to choose and assist the winning screenwriter and also benefitting from the success and final production. Thanks again.

This is an interesting concept! I've thought about making a show about a bunch of guys making a show, I might still do that one day haha.. Have you ever seen that Reality show with Garry Marshall? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Lot#Week_1 Called On The Lot!

BL Gabriel

Wow David; thanks for sharing about "On the lot." I didn't know about it. Mark Burnett was involved in that and Spielberg. Gives me hope...
