Hello all!!
I have a script that I would like to submit to some competitions and was just curious about something. Should I register my script with something- either the WGA or the copyright office? A friend suggested it and I wanted to hear other opinions. I know that I can keep the rights when I submit but would it be beneficial to trademark or copyright my story idea?

You can. Some comps demand it. I don’t as copyright is mine the minute the work is complete.
I'd say just copyright it, cheap and easy. The "self copyright" method doesn't really hold up in a legal case.

You absolutely should register with the library of congress ASAP. Submitting an unregistered script into any competition is nothing short of foolish.
After I complete any script, I register with the LoC, then give it to my readers, make my edits based on feedback (copyright covers minor edits and changes), and finally submit it to contests and industry pros.

LOC is partly about being able to satisfy the chain of title needed by unions and distributors. It's not just about copyrighting your script for your protection, it's about being able to pass that reassurance onto others so their paperwork is satisfied and they've effectively completed their due-diligence.
It's less than $100 and some online form filling that means a studio isn't going to pull out of a script sale over proof of ownership, a production isn't going to get shutdown, or a major distribution deal isn't going to fall through.
The number of writers who want to play in the big league but won't buy a pair of good laces is just outstanding.

Claude. Because that would not be admissible evidence in a federal district court.
WGA registration is only $25 bucks and covers you. If you get traction you probably want to follow CJs lead above and register it with LoC. My 2 cents.
