I just saw this for the first time, and it was fantastic. It's interesting how you can draw different parallels to this story in relation to life experiences. "It was based on the 1891 American short story of the same name by American Civil War soldier, wit, and writer Ambrose Bierce."
I saw it some years ago and you're correct in that it's a fantastic tale. Where did you find it? It's one of the films that I'd like to include in my screenwriting class if I can get a copy.

It aired on THE TWILIGHT ZONE, Season 5, Episode 22, and is available on that season's DVD or Stream.

I stumbled on it watching all the Twilight Zone episodes on Netflix, and thanks Tony S.

I wouldn't recommend the Vimeo version, terrible quality.

And freely available.

Unfortunately, the Vimo version is the only one I have. Thanx Tony, I'll look it up.
Used as an inspiration to Jacob's Ladder (1990)...short film itself ain't much by my opinion but the story and the concept are top notch...
