Screenplay Advice?

I am currently working on writing a 6 Episode/Chapter television series based on H.P. Lovecraft's story, 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth'.

Since I just finished the first draft of episode 2 and episode 3, I am wondering if anyone can help with how I go about packaging all 6 episodes, once completed, as a Feature when submitting it to Festivals.

Thank you!

Matthew Wauchope

I’m not sure I fully understand what you mean and I’m a little tired right now so my thinking isn’t at its best. If you want to know to join each script to make it feature length I would look at the ending of the first episode and the beginning of the second. Then I would look at the end of the second and beginning of the third and so on. In all likelihood it will be a matter of adding or removing just a few lines. If I’m making sense this may seem obvious but it’s surprised me how many people have needed me to suggest exactly this to think of trying it.

I agree with Gary Floyd. If it's a series, commit to it being a series and consider creating a show bible for it. That being said, HPL content is a bit over done at this point so the writing needs to be really strong to get it picked up.

If the story you are writing works best as a miniseries then cramming everything into a feature may be a lot of adaptation work just for submitting to a festival. Stay true to how you think your story will be best told.

Thank you Gary Floyd . I didn't think repackaging my story as a feature would ruin the integrity of the concepts. I was under the impression that it would be the easiest and best way to get it read.

Terrence Sellers Absolutely, I agree. A show bible is a great idea, thank you!

Ewan Dunbar Thank you very much. I don't want to ruin the story/concept that I have right now with the series just for a festival submission.

Perhaps I missed this being discussed, but do you have the rights to HP Lovecraft's story? I'm not a lawyer, but am under the impression that trying to market something you wrote adapted from someone else's IP is illegal. Ignore if this is something you've already worked out.

Clemente Esparza II

Dirk Patton I was under the impression that his works are regarded as "Public Domain". Considering that my story is a prequel to 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth' using the characters.

I will still look into this further. Thanks!

Gary Floyd Very true. Thank you, again! I really appreciate your input on this. Super helpful.
