Screenwriting : Inserting pronouns and orientations in dialogue or not? by Bridget Klassen-Brule

Inserting pronouns and orientations in dialogue or not?

I have a scene in my pilot script where the character engage in some moderate exposition about each of their orientations and give their individual pronouns to a new character. The scene does have social importance and some world building but I am worried that it seem unnatural (as I have struggled with through several rewrites).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Would they say it? If they would say, and they need to say, it needs to be said.

A character has to true and consistent from start to finish. If a character is a man hating person. They will not refer to males as gentlemen, unless joking.

Just make it true to the character and how they speak. If their speech throughout is consistent the reader/audience will accept it as such.

Lean into it. If it feels awkward, allow it to be awkward. Let the characters feel awkward. Have them comment on it being awkward. Do what feels right for the story not the reader.
