Question: how can the independent producer / film utilize these closed spaces?

Hi Producer lounge!

I saw this closed theater.

Sign says "temporary".

My thinking cap says "how can I utilize this closed space" so that a "one day/ weekend" all day film screening'palooza can happen?

I was thinking like a mini'con of genre independent films!

Like a day of horror, or comedy, or road films, documentaries on the screen, while the filmmakers host a booth in the lobby with social media micro- interactions and short lessons about the production combined with, the snack bar serving bites of flavors from the films.

Whoa.

Run on sentence much?

Do you see where I'm going with this? What would the insurance on this look like? How could it be staffed with temporary workers for a day of set up, day of show, day of clean up?

What mini-chains of theaters (Phoenix or Regal) would host a "tour" of the screening'palooza?

Is this worth taking to Cinemacon? (if it comes back)

What brands would partner to fund it?

I'm thinking there is opportunity on the table and the independent filmmakers and content creators can access this real estate for the good of the film goer, the filmmaker, the theater owner and more.

What do you think? Would you please share your opinion below?

I ain't investing in this concept - but the times are a changing.

This is gonna sound strange, but I feel like this is a great subject for one of your #FemaleFilmmakerFriday videos. I used to organize charity events for Can't Stop the Serenity, so I'd LOVE to brainstorm around event ideas! I feel like a weekend workshop would be more engaging right now. Less "viewing" and more "doing", ya know?

This is a topic I've been working closely with my local council on. We have a number of enormous, unoccupied buildings that we're desperate to repurpose for the arts and we're slowly building a proposal for funding. I think this is a great idea and a brilliant bridge to build with local communities.

A wonderful fantasy but we humans have made it way, way more complex to become a viable reality.

I recently had a similar question to your question ("how can I utilize this closed space?"), Cherelynn Baker. It was about renting an abandoned mall for a movie (the price). I was thinking of writing a script that's set in an abandoned mall.

@MauriceVaughn and @SuzanneGarnett - Thank you!

Yes to 'brains'ing on the idea! The space in the photo, has owners who are open to using/donating the space for a weekend festival'ishy thing and were most concerned about insurance due to the "what ifs". OMG Karen "Kay" Ross , I see your point and raise you a day of "screening/workshopping/sips'n'snacks/maybe a mini film challenge to work with what you learned and screen the next day?

Karen "Kay" Ross

Cherelynn Baker CALL! LOL - no seriously, I'm registering for the 48 hour film festival today, so I can TOTALLY see this weekend workshop be a thing! If it's screenwriting, then maybe have live table reads at wrap for finalists? Maybe the winner is filmed the following weekend?
