Animation : Good News/Bad News Day by Terrence Sellers

Terrence Sellers

Good News/Bad News Day

I was hired to write an animated series back in February. It's the first animated production I've ever written. The experience has been interesting, as it's also the first production I've ever written where I wasn't either producing or directing. That is to say, I'm being included in the process at surface level, but I have no real control of the production and how it's being shaped past the writing and requested rewrites. It's a new animal for me and I'm going through the all too common process of having to watch my story be changed significantly due to things like budget.

Originally the first episode was meant to be ready by the end of this month. Today I got word that this would not be the case. It has been delayed for some time. That's the bad news.

I was also notified that 2 additional episodes have already been greenlit with me to be the writer again and that the three episodes will later be reworked into a feature length animated film. That's the good news. This will be the first feature length work I've ever gotten produced. I never would have guessed it would be animated when I first started writing.

Congratulations, Terrence! This is some amazing news!

Dwayne Craig

Congrats man. Tons of great lessons to be learnt from this experience.

Toby Cochran

Sounds like a big WIN to me! Depending on the style of the animated show that's all too common for it to be changed up to meet the needs of the production and budget. Plus many changes (good or bad) can happen in the boarding process. Good luck on the other episodes and the feature! Happy Friday

Karen "Kay" Ross

Agreed, it sounds like a win to me, too! And good for you to keep riding the wave when on someone else's boat. It's not easy when you can't steer, but you stayed with it and that's admirable. Keep at it, and keep us posted!

William Schumpert

What matters is that it’s getting made. The offers I’ve been given have been on hiatus or didn’t evolve into anything. You just have to keep making art.

Jackie Tarascio

That’s awesome! It is normal for rewrites to happen until the end in animation. Always fine tuning, reviewing the reels, doing test screenings. They try not to hit already completed sequences because then it gets expensive. But it does happen. I’m so curious to know which studio!

Bob Harper

Congrats! And not really any bad news, It's just how it goes sometime in animation production - welcome to my world!

Lasse Wennerstrand

Congratulations! It's always hard to see your baby changed into something else, but on the other hand, you get to see it come to life

Kumar Sambhav

whaaat....wait ....where is the bad news !!!! This seems normal. Kudos to the Feature film and many more to come.

Mike Boas

Congrats! Be sure to have some more ideas ready to pitch to. Build on the momentum of this project.

Romey S.

Congrats Terrance! It's always up and down , enjoy the ride!

Mike Romoth

Good luck and keep us up to date on your project.
