Screenwriting : Logline question by Hunter Huiet

Hunter Huiet

Logline question

Is it better to write the logline before you write your screenplay, or is it better to write the logline after the screenplay is completed?

Todd Jenkins

I find that having a solid logline when I start a project helps me to focus on its initial direction. However, loglines can -- and often should -- evolve along with the story. As you make progress you might find that your central conflict isn't what you originally thought it was, and that will probably affect your logline.

Doug Nelson

Start with a logline that's for your eyes only - don't sweat the details. It's just a guideline for you. It will change as the story plays out - that's okay. When you think you finally have a finished/worthy script - then write a killer logline that is a strong marketing tool.

CJ Walley

You should be able to at least summarise the story concept into a rough logline before you start developing/drafting. Wether or not you sit down and write a nicely worded one is up to you. I do but that's partly because I start with building a development document to share with other producers.

Beth Fox Heisinger

I write loglines to help me suss out ideas. Decide if one has narrative legs or not. ;)
