Introduce Yourself : Craig Weeden - Screenwriter by Craig Weeden

Craig Weeden

Craig Weeden - Screenwriter

I'm close to finishing a feature-length actioner for Leigh Simons Productions. Frequent writing partner (and comics legend) Jimmy Palmiotti (Harley Quinn, Painkiller Jane, Deadpool, Black Panther) and I have been hired by MiLa Media to adapt Jimmy's graphic novel QUEEN CRAB into a TV series. I write screenplays, graphic novels, and fiction but no longer write poetry, which in the past used to be published pretty regularly. I'm also a contributor to Pipeline Artists magazine.

Karen "Kay" Ross

Good to see you again, Craig Weeden! Congratulations for pushing forward with your feature - you can finish it! Keep going! Ooo, and congrats on being hired for your adaptation gig!

You write graphic novels as well? Have you written for graphic novels as part of a transmedia project? I'd love for you to share your experience in the Transmedia Lounge: https://www.stage32.com/lounge/transmedia

Maurice Vaughan

Nice to meet you, Craig Weeden. Impressive resume. Do you like writing scripts or graphic novels more?

Craig Weeden

Yes. I do write graphic novels as well as screenplays, but I'm not exactly sure what a transmedia project is. Jimmy Palmiotti and I wrote our graphic novel KILLING TIME IN AMERICA based on our original screenplay. We've also adapted graphic novels into films: PAINKILLER JANE was created/written by Jimmy and Marvel EVP Joe Quesada. We optioned JANE to Solipsist Films. BACK TO BROOKLYN was created/written by Jimmy and THE BOYS' Garth Ennis. Jimmy and I have two graphic novels due out soon. One of the artists is based in Amsterdam, the other in Barcelona. I love the international aspect. While similar, graphic novels and screenplays are definitely different animals. .Their main similarity is the need to tell a great story. I enjoy writing both.

Maurice Vaughan

Craig Weeden, I haven't written a graphic novel, but I would think it needs to be told with fewer words than a screenplay.

Jason Mirch

Hey Craig Weeden - I am glad you're a part of Stage 32! I am sure that other screenwriters could also really benefit from your experience and expertise. I hope to see you in the Lounge offering guidance!

Ophir Zonicle

Hey Craig Weeden you are so awesome I know that me amongst others in here can definitely benefit from your experiences and expertise!!!!!!!!!!

Craig Weeden

When you write a graphic novel, you describe what' we see in each panel, along with the dialogue for each character. Although you don't want to limit the artist's creativity, you call out whether it's a close-up, medium, or long shot. You also call out where the camera is: overhead, from below, from behind, etc. Best way to think of it: with a graphic novel,, you're the writer, director, and DP.

Maurice Vaughan

Thanks for explaining, Craig Weeden.
