Screenwriting : Log line for an ensemble film? by Christoph Brandl

Log line for an ensemble film?

Hello fellow writers, I am preparing a pitch for a project that has four main characters. How does the logline for such a film address may look like? Does it include all characters in one sentence/logline? Can I have more than one sentence and talk about all 4? Any answer I greatly appreciate.

Thank you.

David Santo

Ensemble logline =

1 sentence (about 40 words).

1 lead character.

who

dilemma

action

goal

villain / obstacle

(irony if possible)

Good luck!

StudioBinder wrote an article about this. I find it very helpful. https://www.studiobinder.com/blog/what-is-a-logline/

Read the loglines for "Ocean's Eleven-Thirteen."

Ensembles tend to be big cast with multiple storylines running same time. EG Nashville, The Jane Austin Book Club, The Full Monty, Lantana, City Of Hope. They are never one antagonist V protagonist. I reckon ensemble log lines need depict either a general theme or a social conscience statement together with a hook giving a remaining question so we want to find answer by watching film.

“A group…” there is one story. Focus on that. It will be a good logline.

Treat them as one; _________________ has this ONE MAJOR problem, which they spend the entire film trying to fix - until finally the climax resolves the conflict. Plug in your "what if". Have fun. Just write it; you can always tweak it later.
