plenty of deep movies appeal to mass audience. even fabulous spectacles are known to pack

Dunno. Maybe do the shallow stuff to pay mortgages, put food on table, build a track record. Then do passion projects that will take 10-15-20 years to make. All the ppls I go to advice who are full-time writers don't mind/pay no attention to critics/haters on the outside. "Can't write for a living, go teach."
(OA creators were first-time showrunners. They made a low budget movie that impressed Netflix bosses to give them $$ to make a series. The duo is doing fine).
